Making Nigeria an Enviable Domain Name Server Industry

Everyone has different objectives for the year and mine is to see that the Nigeria’s Domain Name Serve industry (DNS) becomes more relevant than it used to be. And one of the ways to make this happen to encourage like minds in the ICT ecosystem to start seeing Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) as an organisation they must belong.

NiRA is an association responsible for managing the Nigerian domain strings, i.e., .com.ng on the Internet. In other words, it is a self-regulating body and managers of the .ng national resource, the country code Top Level Domain (ccTLD) namespace in the public interest of Nigeria and global internet communities.

However, the goal I believe is also the goal of the body, at least to ensure interested Nigerians to see that Nigeria becomes a more significant player in the global internet space, an ecosystem that is capable of generating revenue for the country if we get it right.

Aside from the goldmine opportunity of generating income for the country, NiRA members have the opportunities to network with other members and the larger internet community. Added to this, is the chance to contribute ideas so that the value of Nigeria’s .ng brand continues to grow.

It is not enough to be in the back seat to suggest, recommend or criticise what other stakeholders are doing. It is just better off to be part of the body, and become stakeholders who are worthy of making critical contributions to the development of Nigeria’s .ng brand.

Meanwhile, I noticed that NiRA needed fresh ideas that would disrupt the status quo, and still need more ideas, that mostly triggered my decision to become a member, irrespective of the fact that I own over 30 .ng domain names on the internet.

The implication of becoming a member is that when you become a member of NIRA, you will be part of the decision-making process and effect those desirable changes, which instantly exempt you from unscrupulous resolutions.

Let me reiterate that one of the reasons I joined NiRA to become a board member is to add fresh ideas and represent the younger generation on the board. There was no need for me to be passive and criticize their operations because I needed my voice to be heard by becoming a key stakeholder. I believe you can borrow a leave from my actions.

I will interest you to know that the key drivers for NiRA in terms of getting new members on board is its policy development process which gives room to stakeholder associations and members of the internet community to contribute to its formulation. This is against the backdrop or belief that you are going to become a bench warmer when you join NiRA.

If you decided to become a member and identify yourself, you would have the ultimate right, privileges and opportunities to network with other NIRA Members, at the same time working towards making Nigeria an enviable Domain Name Server Industry in the world.

On a final note, if you are convinced enough to become part of the group that would maximise and transform the Domain Name Server Industry, you can probably follow the steps below and become a member of NiRA.
