3 Major Concerns Transacting on a Blockchain Platform

0

It is interesting to know that Bitcoin is not the only cryptocurrency. Bitcoin has been making series of headlines and it is just one of the cryptocurrencies.

There is another digital currency known as Ethereum. In other words, Bitcoin and Ethereum are both a digital currencies that run on an application platform.

Ethereum stores transaction data and application logic, in the Blockchain. Blockstack, on the other hand, is an application platform, but not a digital currency. Its blockchain implementation is an overlayer or virtual chain of existing cryptocurrency blockchains.

However, the security risks of running these different Blockchain platforms is a major concern. There are three concerns; security risks of running untrusted code, the scalability bottlenecks of decentralized blockchain networks, and the general level of resilience inherent in the application platform.

Alid Castano, US Blockchain technology Enthusiast in response to the question, shares his views on Blockchain technology security concerns.

Running Untrusted Code

The ultimate goal of blockchains is to allow the exchange of valuable, scarce data — i.e. digital property — without the need for a third party to oversee each transaction.

This only works, however, if you can effectively prevent malicious parties or accidental bugs from tampering with the system. And the main way this vulnerability is exploited is via untrusted, third-party code.

There are two main factors that determine the risk of running untrusted code: first, the completeness of the scripting language, second, the location where the code is executed.

Ethereum allows for a turing-complete language, which means that its developers are able to write contracts with a language capable of expressing all tasks accomplishable by computers (compare that to Bitcoin whose scripting language can be more adequately compared with the capabilities of a spreadsheet); furthermore, Ethereum executes this code within its blockchain.

In essence: untrusted third parties are equipped with an expressive language they could use to directly manipulate the underlying blockchain.

Ethereum guards against this security concern via other measures, such as transaction fees that limit the execution time of contracts, but the inherent, possibly uncaught vulnerabilities exposed by its design still remain.

Blockstack, on the other hand, humbly takes a less ambitious approach: it only exposes a predefined set of operations that are vetted and executed by its virtual chain.

Only after being safely executed is the resulting transaction data stored in the underlying blockchain.

Scaling Decentralized Blockchain Networks

Blockchain protocols have a challenging limitation: every fully participating member in the network must process every transaction.

Due to this, as a blockchain grows, it becomes more expensive, both in terms of time and money, to handle more transactions. So if you want your dApp’s transactions to remain fast and cheap, the scalability of the platform has to be a top concern.

There are two main ways to think about the blockchain scalability: on-chain scalability (inside of the blockchain) and off-chain scalability (outside of the blockchain).

In a traditional, centralized database system, this difference would be trivial — as transactions increase, you can just invest in more servers for more computing power.

But in a decentralized blockchain, you have little control over the computing power of fully-participating peers in the network, yet you still need to ensure a diverse majority of them can process each block to prevent the centralization of power.

The seemingly unavoidable trade-off of low transaction throughput and a high degree of centralization is what makes on-chain scalability difficult for blockchain systems.

The safe bet is to circumvent the problem by making minimal use of the blockchain. This is the path Blockstack takes–the only data stored inside its underlying blockchain are critical data bindings.

This provides a shared source of truth, i.e. to verify who owns what, while allowing all other computation and storage to be handled by already proven internet infrastructure.

For example, for application storage, Blockstack allows users to configure multiple storage providers, such as Dropbox and IPFS, where data is encrypted and backed up.

Ethereum, on the other hand, makes heavy usage of the blockchain — all transaction data and smart contracts are stored inside its blockchain.

Due to this, scalability issues need to be handled there as well, which makes scalability extremely challenging. In order to scale, Ethereum developers are going to have to overcome on-chain scaling difficulties that distributed systems researches have been wrestling with for decades.

The Resilience of the Application Platform

Since the outcome of any single cryptocurrencies is still largely uncertain, you ideally want to pick the application platform that will be the most resilient to any blockchain failure.

For example, if a hard-fork or 51% attack is performed on the dApp platform’s underlying blockchain — how quickly will it be able to recover, if at all?

Ethereum developers are betting on the resilience of the Ethereum blockchain. As explained above, due to Ethereum’s ambitious design decisions, it has a larger surface area for attacks.

This is especially alarming because blockchain designs are intrinsically irreversible. If a hacker discovers a flaw in Ethereum or in a deployed smart contract, they are free to attack it as long and hard as they can.

Past attacks have demonstrated how limited defenses are: perform a community-splitting fork to freeze the funds (as done in the DAO attack) or, if the theft can’t be reversed, hack the remaining vulnerable contracts before the attacker does (as done in the $31M Parity multisig wallet hack).

And, since protocol changes require the majority agreement of all miners, any fixes post-attack happen slowly and end up being disruptive to the ecosystem.

Meanwhile, Blockstack developers are betting on the resilience of Blockstack’s virtual chain which can operate on any blockchain — if the blockchain of their chosen digital currency becomes unsafe, they can migrate.

In fact, Blockstack has already proven their ability to outlive their underlying blockchain: it successfully migrated from Namecoin to Bitcoin, when they discovered a single miner had more than 65% computing power.

Since then, Blockstack has resolved to always operate on the most stable and safe digital currency, which so far has continued to be Bitcoin. (In the future, Blockstack plans to support multiple digital currencies and enable operations across them, but we’ll leave that aside for now.)

Furthermore, as a layer 2 protocol, Blockstack can deploy changes to their platform independently of the underlying blockchain. So if any vulnerabilities are discovered, Blockstack can react faster to patch things up.

Conclusion

DApp platforms are in their early stages. The advantages Ethereum dApps have right now are Ethereum’s market value and dApp ecosystem. But both Ethereum and Blockstack dApps are yet to be truly tested at large scale. Only time will tell what will happen but what’s evident right now is that their implementations stand in stark contrast to each other.

Smart TV: Interesting Tips you Need to Know Before Getting one

0

Today, televisions are getting smart, built on smart sensors. These smart televisions, from LCD to OLED, from 720p to 2160p, are all available in the market. I remember attending a smart T.V launch by LG Electronics 3 years ago, and one of the smart TVs then was about N2million.

But today, you can get as low as N40, 000 smart T.V, they all are present in today’s market.

Similar to a computer, a smart TV enables you to browse the internet, be on social media, and watch YouTube but do not support things sending out emails or processing documents.

How do I connect my TV to the internet?

All of the smart TVs currently accept an Ethernet cable at the back of the TV, while most also support wireless connection. (Ethernet cable transmits the broadband signals between your modem, router, computer, and other wired Internet-capable devices).

However, in other to connect your smart TV to the internet, you will need to set up a home network which is very much similar to connecting your PC.

How do TV apps work?

Interestingly, no matter the brand or make of a smart TV, they usually have a home page just like your smartphone or PC, when connected. From the homepage, you can access different links, options and application stores.

Most of the applications on these smart TV are usually free, and some smart TV manufacturers are hoping to translate the popularity of paid apps on mobile devices to televisions.

Manufacturers like Panasonic and Sony have conventionally been different, new features are automatically downloaded once available, and become selectable from the main page. However, Panasonic has just announced its app store, so this may change.

“Apps currently include games, internet radio, weather, and entertainment. One of the most original apps so far is Bigpond’s NRL/AFL Game Analyser, which includes several seasons’ worth of full games marked with highlights that you can stream to your TV”.

However, are a few 5 Things to know before buying a Smart TV

Check out the features of the smart TV you intend to buy and know exactly the features you need. It may not be necessary to obtain higher features because you might end up spending much money and not using some of the features

Purchase an external sound system to get a better viewing experience; this is because when the thickness diminishes the sound quality is usually affected.

Buy the biggest TV that your room and budget permits.

The truth is that plus 4k content is not as rampant as the 1080p TV but it delivers a higher picture quality than the 1080p TV, but you will hardly notice.

Against the backdrop that most curved TVs offer much regarding the higher quality image, they don’t. Except for curved screen which comes at a steep price.

OLED TVs offer the best picture quality but are expensive.

Cyber Stalking: What you Need to do

0

Online stalking is known to be frequent unwanted contact from another individual that is highly undesirable and the outcome to either male or female victims is at best discomfort and annoyance, and at worst severe distress and mental trauma.

The risk factors of being stalked online are usually enormous; hence it is imperative that strong online security measures are adopted.

“People who have an internet addiction are at particular risk as they can “lose touch with the real world and find it harder to form relationships,

This means you become more invested in online relationships and can become fixated on them, says Emma Short, Psychologist from the National Centre for Cyber-stalking Research, based at the University of Bedfordshire.

There is always an intent behind stalking someone online, it is usually a bad one. Sometimes, it could be from somebody who knows you or someone you don’t even know at all. Your ex might even be the one stalking you online. That is why a relationship that breaks up in a bad way is disastrous.

Hackers are also found wanting in this kind of ugly situation where you are being tracked and monitored from one social media platform to the other. They are bent on searching for your personal information.

It might be a bit confusing to figure out if you are being stalked online or not, but countries like England have laws that address issues relating to online stalking.

Whichever country you find yourself, stalking someone online is like invading someone’s privacy and therefore is regarded as an offense.

“Stalking is a type of harassment,” says Detective Superintendent Jon Gilbert in Bedfordshire

“It’s about how the victim perceives the actions. Even things such as silent phone calls have been seen to be harassment due to the impact that they can have on other people,” he says.

However, it is important victims of this cybercrime to always report to the nearest police stations or seek help from any other angle.

How to Prevent yourself from Cyber Stalking

  • Do not overload your profile with so much information, just make it simple.
  • Be cautious about public wifi
  • Ensure your wireless hub/router has security enabled.
  • Change frequently your email and passwords
  • Review all your privacy and security settings
  • Have and updated antispyware software installed
  • Financial details are critical; make sure you don’t disclose them
  • Be cautious about online forums and communities
  • Make sure you have the latest software update

Cyber stalking is bad because it’s an invasion of privacy. Try to implement some of the security measures listed. However, if all necessary information should be reported to the police if you are being stalked

Social Media Week: Social Media, Key to Achieving 2030 SDGs

0

Stakeholders who gathered at the recently concluded Social Media Week in Lagos are of the opinion that social media could be used as a tool to achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The SDGs are also known as “Transforming our World: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development” or 2030 Agenda was agreed upon by 193 countries in September 2015 at the United Nations.

According to Runcie Chidebe, Founder, Project Pinkblue Foundation, effective deployment of social media will serve as a tool to help fasten the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Chidebe who spoke “Social Media as a Tool to Achieve SDGs by 2030″, at the 6th edition of the Social Media Week expressed confidence in using social media to achieve the goal signed by many countries under the auspices of UN. He advised that one should know his target audience to be able to use social media well. Adding that through the social media, SDGs, which is the achievement of gender equality and empowerment of women and girls, has received a reasonable attention.

”Sometime in August 2017, we organized a programme and realized that there was no single radiotherapy machine in Nigeria except one privately-owned.

“We saw the need to go to government agencies but unfortunately did not succeed, until we decided to tweet the issue.

“I started tweeting with an article I wrote and tagged “Cancer patients paying with blood in Nigeria”.

“‘It got so much re-tweet that a few days after, the minister of health attended our event.

” The first thing he did even before his address was to respond to our tweet, saying that it was through such tweets that many issues could be addressed in Nigeria, ” he added.

Speaking also, Adepeju Jaiyeoba, Founder Brown Button Foundation, remarked that social media could change the narrative of Nigeria.

She explained the efficiency of social media as ‘using the ordinary to achieve the extraordinary’.

”It opens the country to the world,” she said.

It could be frustrating when you stop receiving any text messages. Probably you can send out but can’t receive. Here are the solutions to the issue.

It should console you that your phone is not completely damaged; neither do you need a replacement for the SIM, phone or any hardware. All that needs to be done is to find out where the glitch is. You can totally handle it.

1. Check if the device is in Ghost mode

Mobile devices with the Android Lollipop 5.0 have a user account feature that protects one’s data when you give out your phone to someone. This feature is known as Ghost Mode. This prevents new messages from entering your inbox. Here is how to remove your phone from guest mode:

  • Open notification bar of your Android device
  • Tap the user icon twice
  • A list of profiles will show, choose your desired option.

2. Clear up old and unimportant texts

Most of us just allow our inbox to fill up with unnecessary texts, even promotional text. Delete the SMS that you do not need again. Switch off your phone for some minutes and then turn it on. The SMS will start pouring in.

3. Make sure your default SMS app is set right

If the default location for text messaging is not set to your phone’s SMS app but rather to a third party app, then no text gets delivered to your phone’s inbox. At least you won’t see them coming in.

When you are using a third party messaging app, it might be the source of this problem. First of all, make sure it is updated to the latest version. Clear the cache and then restart your phone.

Google’s Hangout is sometimes the case here too.

To make sure it is not getting your text, open Hangout, go to settings and check if it is the default SMS app, if it is, changes it back. Remove any third party SMS app you installed if the problem persists, send a text to yourself to confirm.

4. Reset your device

I always don’t like out journey reaching here. But sometimes the problem is from the phone itself. A factory reset operation is necessary. As usual, make sure you back up your data.

A readily available option is your Google account. Check online how to perform a reset on your specific phone type as they vary by phone.

5. Contact your Network Service Provider

The fault might actually be from your service provider. It is either from your SIM or from the side of your network provider. To confirm this, simply give them a call as they are in the best position to know the cause because they can see everything from their side.

For better and easier results, do not call them from the phone in issue, just have it close by in case they might be asking questions, in which I am sure they will ask.

Basically, your network provider or the person who picks up should be able to take you off and reconnect you back to a stronger connection. This is sure to solve the issue of not being able to receive text messages. This is called Power Cycling, much more like switching off and on your phone.

How to Fix iPhone Crash

0

Apps on our phones are great tools we use in our everyday activities. When they begin to go off and on while using them, it becomes frustrating. If you are experiencing frequent app crashes on your iPhone, there are ways to fix the problem.

1. Simply Restart your iPhone.

It’s amazing how some users don’t leave their phone running for a long time. Try restarting the iPhone periodically.

The single solution to some problems on our phones is just to restart your phone. Restarting your iPhone can take care of app crash on your device.

2. Deactivate/Quit and Launch the App Again

When an app keeps crashing, deactivate such app, and then relaunch it.

Go to Settings to quit such defaulting app. Wait for a while and start it again. These most times take care of any part of the apps causing the crashes. Also clear cache from the app.

3. Update the Apps to the Latest Version

Updates to applications are released for a reason. Developers of app give updates to fix bugs and issues found or reported on such apps. Go to your iPhone App Store and make the update.

4. Remove the app and Install again

If the above steps didn’t fix the problem, then you should consider uninstalling the app, and then reinstall it. This should be your next option especially if there are no updates. Reinstalling a frequently crashing app does give it a fix.

5. Update/Upgrade your iPhone software (iOS)

Sometimes the origin of this issue isn’t the app itself, but your iPhone. So it is also important to update your iOS to the latest. Many bugs that might be responsible for such a problem are fixed by such updates.

Conclusion

Clearing of caches can prove a good solution to app crashing. And as we use our phones, try to make a phone restart from time to time.

If the above steps don’t work. You should contact the developer about the issue and they might show you a way out.

Leave a question and or comment below. As always we will attend to each issue.

Fresh Attacks Emerge as the Surge for Cryptocurrency Minning Heightens

0

The rapid rise in cryptocurrency mining which could possibly give room for fraud money laundering and tensions in the market, as this surge is becoming a source of worry to experts.

This, according to experts will trigger system intruders that will hijack confidential data from computers and systems in a bid to mine virtual coin.

Miners are those code crunchers who control systems designed to process the blockchain transactions that slowly build up the credits with which to obtain cryptocurrency units such as Bitcoins.

Reports show that they are shifting their operations off computer CPUs (central processing units) to GPUs (graphics processing units) which is more powerful.

Why are Crypto-miners Threats?

Crypto-miners have the capacity to inject shortcodes or JavaScript on the web through different creative hacking techniques.

The goal for injecting this code through the web is to connect hijacked systems to a centralized mining. And this process allows immediate crypto-mining when a user visits the site, the script runs in the browser.

Before now, Kaspersky Lab predicted that miners could be among 2018’s most common cyber-threats.

In 2017, the firm’s security solutions stopped the launch of web miners on more than 70 million occasions, “and the use of such scripts is only set to rise,” the Russian security company.

Meanwhile, Check Point “2017 Global Cyber Attack Trends Report,” reveals that “one of the most significant trends of the last few months which took the world by storm is the incredibly rapid rise of crypto-currency miners, especially the Web-based type.”

“Over the past three months, crypto-mining malware has steadily become an increasing threat to organizations, as criminals have found it to be a lucrative revenue stream,” says Maya Horowitz, manager of Check Point’s Threat Intelligence Group.

“It is particularly challenging to protect against, as it is often hidden in websites, enabling hackers to use unsuspecting victims to tap into the huge CPU resource that many enterprises have available. As such, it is critical that organizations have the solutions in place that protect against these stealthy cyber-attacks.”

“There are both quasi-legitimate and legitimate uses of this technology to monetize customers,” says Joshua Motta founder and CEO of Coalition, billed as the first technology-enabled cyber-insurance solution.

“It is obviously problematic if you don’t disclose you are doing it and do it without their consent. You are stealing their CPU resources for your own gain.

There are Websites and publishers who are confirming it and getting consent to do so. I imagine there are people willing to do that, so it’s a fair trade.”
