The world is gradually becoming an insecure place. Dangers of all sorts are always lurking in around to hurt people. The news is daily filled with horrifying stories of kidnapping, carjacking and murder. It is hard to keep those you love safe nowadays. It is, however, possible to use your smartphone to enhance your personal safety.

Personal safety can be enhanced using various safety apps that are downloadable through your app store. Most of these personal safety apps have various common features that help you to cope with an emergency.

Such apps will send texts, email, tweets or Instant messages to friends that are in close proximity when triggered. The message may include photos and audio snippets of the situation or emergency. The people who get these messages can then come to your rescue and assist you to get out of the dangerous situation.

Often the app will activate a loud alarm to signify that you are in danger. The shrill whistle signal works just like a sort of rape alarm. This allows those nearby know that somebody is in danger. These alarms can be customized to the preferences of the user. Some additional features found in some personal safety applications include alerts about impending danger as well as geofencing.

There are several personal safety apps but Nigeria’s Delgem Incorporation launched Naija Rescue Alert app, 9RA. The app works like a conventional emergency application but it is customized for African and especially, Nigerian use. The app keeps people linked to their loved ones and sends them signals when one is in danger.

In addition to sending emergency alerts, 9RA acts as a personal tracker and location device. It is also an incident reporting tool that can be very useful especially in a court of law.

9RA will use location maps and GPRS to pinpoint your exact geographical location. This information will be relayed to your contacts, the authorities or medical care center depending on the circumstances.
