A Ransomware is a type of malware that prevents you from using your PC by encrypting your files until a payment is made. It is usually distributed through phishing mails or downloaded from infected websites or through a botnet command and control server if your computer had not been properly cleaned up after a previous infection.

Here some tips on what you can do to prevent this from ever happening:

  1. Install and Use a good anti-virus software, preferably, a premium version, if you can afford it.
  2. Check the Health of your Computer on a regular basis
  3. Make sure you take periodic backups of your PC, just in case you encounter an extremely stubborn ransomware that requires a re-installation of your operating system.
  4. Avoid clicking on links and opening email attachments that you are not sure of.
  5. Finally, have a pop-up blocker on your browser and allow only the sites you are sure of to open automatically.

Like I always say, nothing is full-proof online, but once you can adhere to basic tips such as these and keep your curiosity or greed in check, then, you should be safe online.

Here is a note of Warning: If your computer is connected to a USB drive, local backup device or a network storage system it is also possible for a sophisticated ransomware to jump onto these systems through the connection and encrypt files there too. You, therefore, have to be careful to prevent this from happening too.

We welcome your comments on your experience with ransomware and how you got it resolved.

  3. This is a pretty dangerous malware. I think social media users should also be Warned not to unnecessarily accept friend requests from strangers or even click or misleading links. Because they often use these ways to get to their victims.
