To tell you the truth, I had to dedicate some time to find these solutions and it stems from the fact that some parents asked me this question at a conference. If you are assuming your child or ward does not have access to this sort of content, then you may not be facing reality. Chances of them consuming such materials are extremely high if there are no controls. In most cases, the journey into the world of pornography starts with a simple unassuming banner asking for friendship, once the banner is clicked, the rest is history.

My primary recommendation is to have a good Anti-virus service that will allow you run Parental control features which should block this type of content by default.

Here are some tools and apps that you can also try:

1. CloudACL: It provides a safe browsing experience that would block unwanted content while surfing the web. It is available as an add-on for your Firefox or Chrome browsers and also has Android and iOS Mobile apps.

2. K9 Web Protection: This is also a veteran trusted by parents that are bothered about this situation. K9 is a free Internet filter and parental control software for your Windows or Mac PC.

3. CyberPatrol: As the name implies, it helps parents or guardian to patrol the cyber-space on behalf of their children and wards. This is a paid service and if you ask me, it is worth it, considering the dangers out there.

4. X3Watch: It monitors Internet usage, filters content that you see while browsing and lets you share your progress with people you trust – which might be helpful for those dealing with the addiction.

5. Covenant Eyes: This provides a good level of protection for the entire family, but comes in with a different approach of getting you to be accountable to somebody. When the child, therefore, visits any such sites, someone gets an email informing him or her.

You can read more on parental control tools and apps that can further assist you.

Long and short of it is that Children and Teenagers of today are extremely smart and tech-savvy, so never ever assume. What’s your take on this?

  1. The kids of nowadays tend to visit pornographic site daily or watch porn. Its eaten deep into them that i begin to wonder if its due to their parent’s lack of proper guidance, but i have realized that most child are very secretive and with locks and password on phone and parents respect for their wards, its difficult to curb this ills in the society.

    • Most atimes the parents involved knows close to nothing about th internet, now that’s another issue there, good point there Gloria

  2. These kinds have been existent for long now. More threats to morality have however emerged from social media. There is no day I visit my instagram page without reporting accounts that display obscene content. Worse is nothing is being done. I come back the following day or even weeks after and their accounts are still oozing with fresh pornographic videos and pictures… It’s really annoying

    • bro, it is now the order of the day for some pple but as for others it seems their account is hacked cos that the ish with my bro, some one is post porn with his acct on fb day in day out. It is very alarming and dat brings about the rape cases, cos many wish to practicalise what they watch.

  3. Parents can also cut down the use of Internet and probably be with their kids wen there’s a need to use the Internet.

  4. Well, this is a very technical issue. Pornographic content is something that is used by advertising agencies these days to market products. There was a time I saw a billboard with the advert of a very popular alcoholic drink and a very attractive lady that was scantily dressed beside the bottle of drink being advertised.
The first thing that crossed my mind was, what’s the correlation between a pretty girl like that and the product on advert.
Our home videos also promote pornographic content a lot! It’s what brings in money to them these days. Despite that they rated such videos PG or whatever.
Newspaper vendors by the road sides selling soft-sell magazines with pornographic content on their front pages for innocent children coming from school to look at free of charge.
So, even if parents succeeded at preventing their children from getting pornographic content online, what about the aforementioned? And many more I did not put on the list.
    May God help our children.

  5. Pornography has been issue even while I was growing up as a child in the mid 90s but I think the parents have a role to play in preventing our children from being exposed to pornography on the internet or mobile devices. I think the tools and app listed above will help parents control their children from watching pornographic content on the internet or mobile devices.
